Aiken, South Carolina is the county seat of Aiken County, and as of 2010 the population was quickly approaching 30,000 residents. This community was formed in 1871 and was named for South Carolina Railroad president William Aiken. Historically, horse racing has been extremely important to the economy of this community, and each year the city hosts the Imperial Cup steeplechase races, with many of the horses being trained at the Aiken Training Track. Higher education is also available in this city, as Aiken is the home of the University of South Carolina at Aiken and Aiken Technical College.
There are several notable attractions located in Aiken. The Aiken Center for the Arts offers a fine arts gallery and educational classes, and Joye in Aiken hosts live artistic performances. The Aiken County Farmers Market is the oldest food market in the state, and visitors who are interested in learning more about the area’s racing history may enjoy a trip to the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum. Additionally, history buffs also tend to enjoy a trip to the area, and places like the Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site and Rose Hill Estate are especially popular destinations.
Aiken is located within a humid subtropical climate zone. Visitors and residents will enjoy cool and dry winters, with average high temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to upper-60s during the winter. Overnight lows can easily fall below the freezing point, and although snowfall is minimal, these low temperatures could lead to dangerous conditions. Without investing in an efficient heat pump or furnace, interior temperatures could become dangerously cold, and interior pipework could freeze.
Summers in Aiken tend to be hot with high humidity. High temperatures reach the upper 90s during the summer, so residents are wise to invest in an air conditioning unit to stay comfortable. These systems are crucial to keep interior temperatures cool and can also make life more bearable for allergy and asthma suffers, as they can improve indoor air quality.
